Piedras Negras/Eagle Pass to Morelia
Vehicle crossing the border at Piedras Negras is quick and efficient; follow the signs. Most of Hiway 57 south is an Autopista, quota, or toll road, at least until past Monclova. The two-lane blacktop may be four-lane by now.
About 50 kil. before Saltillo, at Santa Cruz, Hiway #57 turns off and becomes a quota. The only direction is south, towards Matehuala, by-passing Saltillo, and blessedly, by-passing Monterrey.
Continue south on #57, after San Luis Potosi, keep driving south towards Querétaro. Skip the Mexico City bypass. The route is well marked.
If you are hungry, don't miss the best seafood in Querétaro, Chilo Marisco. After skipping the Mexico City Cuota, slow down, because on the right, entrance is just after the overpass. Chilo has really good sea food and service is very snappy. I wasn’t hungry and had three shrimp tacos. Loved them! Great restrooms, if you just want to stretch your legs!
When you have eaten, turn right, out of the parking lot, to the south and on the 4 to 6 lane road into Querétaro. Well into the city, take the Salamanca Quota to the right, from Querétaro, past Celaya, towards Irapuato. Four (4) kilometers before Salamanca, take the new quota to Morelia, marked Morelia - Ixtapa. Follow signs to Morelia.
